Moments so happy and full of joy that it is overwhelming: But there are many, many more magical moments. I feel guilt for letting one of you down in that moment. Sometimes these two don’t mix and I can’t do both. Big sister wants me to play with her- at not quite 2 years old, I’m the best playmate she knows. You want to be held- my arms are the happiest, warmest and safest place you know. There are moments when I very much want to make you both happy. With no way to comfort you, we have to walk the six blocks home- you screaming, me sweating, big sister looking sullen. The fleece and wool cover to your infant car seat, snapped into the stroller, is your outdoor gear and it’s too cold to take you out. I feel desperate to comfort you but we are still 6 blocks away from home. There have been a few moments where you start crying your poor little head off in the stroller. I survive these moments they are motherhood. There are days when I do nothing alone, including shower, sleeping and going to the bathroom. Her tears don’t feel precious, they feel sad and frustrated and I swallow those emotions. She spirals out of emotional control when I can’t because you are nursing and I have no hands to comfort her and her big emotions. There are moments when your sister cries for me to put you down or put you in your swing. But I can’t always respond to you as quickly as I want to, my sweet boy, because I have another child and I’m only one mother. And I believe that this impacts long term attachment and development. I believe the experts who say that a parent should respond quickly and in a nurturing manner to their newborn every time the baby cries that this build trust, let’s the baby know that their needs will be met and that they are safe. They are the moments when both you and your sister are crying and I have to choose which one to comfort first while I have to let the other cry. A number of the moments in our day aren’t precious and for enjoyment. I love you so deeply and in a way that you probably won’t understand until you hold your firstborn, should you choose to have kids. I’m pretty sure that any sane person with a glimpse into our life would agree. You see, my sweet boy, it’s perfectly impossible to “enjoy every precious single moment” because they are not all precious and they are not all enjoyable. Unraveling being an easy accomplishment in the first weeks postpartum. I feel like this phrase is unfair and it was one of the things that unraveled me during that crazy hormone ride during your first week of life. When someone has a birthday, you say “happy birthday.” When someone has a baby, you say this. It’s our culture’s go-to congrats platitude. I’ve been thinking about how the new mother gets inundated with the phrase “enjoy every precious moment!” by many well-meaning supporters during this newborn period. I’m so very tired but I haven’t been to sleep yet even though the hour is late for this mom of two very young kids and “bedtime” (there is no such thing in the land of newborn) is 8:30pm (that’s the time we go to our room for the night).Īs I try hard to get you to sleep in your crib instead of in bed with me, I’ve been lying awake thinking while hoping hard you stay in the crib. It’s 11pm and I am listening happily to you gulp and coo softly as you nurse. These words felt like they wanted to be shared. I wrote the same letters for my daughter, chronicling our first year together but didn’t share any of them. The following is from my writing project for my new son. Window._dctk_guid_ = JSON. This audibly and odiferously caramelized the bit of flesh that met the scorching metal of the tray. Halved, the squash went face-down onto an oiled baking tray and into a 400-degree oven for a little less than half an hour. But here we are now, and baby, I’m so glad. Had I still had those, I’d never have thought to sprinkle the top of my bowl of soup with pine nuts instead. The seeds were scooped out for an earlier use, as a brown sugar-baked topping for my last Chili Takedown recipe. Picking the heaviest one for its size (they’re fresher), I figured I had in my hands a single-girl portion of squash soup with the beautifully ridged, round specimen, with an orange and green-speckled skin. I grabbed the smallest squash I could find for my sole consumption. Luckily, acorn squashes from the Greenmarket come in quite a variety of shapes and sizes, though if truly acorns, they would all be in the Giant Land level of Mario Bros. Food that generally comes in sizes bigger than my head can be a bit of a puzzler, exacerbated by the fact that I live alone. And then I have a lot of squash to eat throughout the week (it seems odd to leave cleavered quarters of a single squash in the fridge for long). I should note that most of the time, I opt for an enormous orb of fleshy butternut, or stringy spaghetti squash. It’s mid-February, and I’m almost at the end of my rope with winter squash. Call me shallow, but sometimes beauty just isn’t that deep. I’m sinking these crispy, salty kale “chips” into its sweet custard and lodging a pebble of a pine nut onto a spoon for the ultimate scoop. It could have a splash of cream or milk or not. It could be any squash, butternut, pumpkin. Here, we’ve got creamy roasted acorn squash soup. It’s not what’s inside the soup that counts. This means that, should the recipient later dispose of the property, the recipient doesn’t incur capital-gains tax on any gains that had accrued when the donor owned the property. So, while these rules may trigger a capital gain for the donor, they accordingly bump the recipient’s tax cost. The recipient, in turn, is deemed, for tax purposes, to have acquired the property at a tax cost equal to the property’s value. Therefore, if, at the time of the gift, the donor’s tax cost for the gifted property was less than the property’s value, the donor will realize a taxable capital gain. In more detail, when a taxpayer donates a capital property, the taxpayer is deemed, for tax purposes, to have received fair-market-value consideration-specifically, the fair market value of the gifted property, as determined at the time of the gift. These rules apply to gifts either between related parties (e.g., parent/child, corporation/shareholder, trust/beneficiary, etc.) or between arm’s-length parties (e.g., charitable donation).īasically, when a taxpayer gifts a capital property, the rules deem the donor to have received fair-market-value proceeds, and they deem the recipient to have acquired the property at fair-market-value cost. The capital-gains implications of a gift are set out in subparagraph 69(1)(b)(ii) and paragraph 69(1)(c) of Canada’s Income Tax Act. Tax Implications of Gifting Capital Property: Deemed Fair-Market Proceeds for Donor & Bumped Up ACB for Recipient The article concludes by providing tax tips. This article examines the tax implications of subsection 69(1) in the context of a gift and in the context a non-arm’s-length transaction that deviates from fair market value. Subsection 69(1) applies to gifts and non-arm’s-length transactions, and, for some taxpayers, it may give rise to unexpected capital-gains tax. The rule may also deem a taxpayer to have received proceeds other than the actual sale price. Notably, subsection 69(1) of the Income Tax Act may stipulate that a taxpayer’s ACB is an amount other than the price that the taxpayer actually paid to acquire the property. (Transaction costs would also affect the capital gain or loss computation.)Ĭanada’s Income Tax Act may, however, adjust a taxpayer’s tax cost or proceeds of disposition. The taxpayer may deduct one-half of the loss-i.e., $12,500-from any other realized capital gain. The taxpayer will then realize a capital loss of 75,000 – 100,000 = $25,000. Say instead that the taxpayer sold the property for $75,000. The taxpayer must report one-half of the gain-i.e., $25,000-as income. The taxpayer therefore realizes a capital gain of 150,000 – 100,000 = $50,000. In this case, the taxpayer’s adjusted cost base is $100,000 and the proceeds are $150,000. For example, a taxpayer buys a rental property for $100,000 and sells it a few years later for $150,000. The ACB, when deducted from the proceeds of disposition, determines the amount of a capital gain or loss when a taxpayer disposes of a capital property. The second figure is the taxpayer’s proceeds for disposing of the capital property. The first is the adjusted cost base (ACB), which is the taxpayer’s tax cost for acquiring a capital property. Two amounts are used to compute the balance of a capital gain or loss. Another example: an allowable-business-investment loss (ABIL) is a specific defined type of capital loss that may be deducted from any source of income.) For instance, if a deceased taxpayer has allowable capital losses remaining even after applying all available carryovers, the excess losses may offset any source of income on the deceased’s income-tax return for the year of death or for the year before the year of death. That is, allowable capital losses generally cannot be used to offset, say, business income or employment income. So, only half of a capital loss is an allowable deduction, and the deduction may only be used to offset taxable capital gains. If, on the other hand, the taxpayer sells the property at a loss, the taxpayer may deduct one-half of the loss from the taxable portion of any capital gain. In other words, only half of a capital gain is taxable. Generally, when a taxpayer disposes of a capital property-e.g., real property, corporate shares, a partnership interest, mutual funds, etc.-and realizes a capital gain, the taxpayer must include one-half of the gain in his or her income.
